What the checker verifies
- Format and length: Swiss and Liechtenstein IBANs have 21 characters.
- Check digits: according to ISO 13616. A typo is almost always caught.
- QR-IBAN: based on the institution identification 30000 to 31999.
- Reference: QR reference with modulo 10 check digit or creditor reference according to ISO 11649.
- Combination: whether IBAN and reference are allowed together on a QR invoice.
The most common mistake
A QR reference with a regular IBAN, or a QR-IBAN without a QR reference. The payment part prints fine, but the customer’s bank rejects the payment. With the QR invoice generator this cannot happen: it picks the reference that matches the IBAN.
Frequently asked questions
How do I recognise a QR-IBAN?
By the institution identification (IID), positions 5 to 9 of the IBAN. Between 30000 and 31999 it is a QR-IBAN. Example: CH44 3199 9123 0008 8901 2.
Which reference goes with which IBAN?
A QR-IBAN only works with a QR reference (27 digits). A regular IBAN works with a creditor reference (starts with RF) or with no reference. Banks reject other combinations.
How do I get a QR-IBAN?
From your bank, usually free for your existing account. It is worth it if you issue many invoices and want to match payments automatically.
Is the IBAN stored?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to us.
